During 2007 year Kamenny Vek company executed a series of experiments for determination of tensile modulus of advanced basalt fibers produced by the company. The measurements were made on epoxy impregnated strands by ASTM D2343. Typical samples are shown in Fig. 1.

For the first part of the work, when the comparison of basalt and E-glass data was made, tensile modulus was determined at the Institute of Synthetic Polymer Materials RAS (Moscow) by means of video extensometer. Measurements were carried out at Shimadzu AGS-G tensioning machine with Messphysik videoextensometer ME46.

For the second part of the work, the influence of filament diameter on the modulus values of the strand was investigated. Measurements were carried out at Kamenny Vek laboratory, on an Instron-type machine with the axial-contact extensometer MTS634.25F-54.
