CST Composites, Australia have run trials to check the possible use of basalt fibers for filament winding of composite tubes. During the trails a 4m long epoxy based tube with 32 mm diameter and 2mm wall thickness was produced. Basalt showed perfect workability during filament winding.
The stiffness of the tube was compared with that of E-glass and carbon samples. Basalt based sample showed 15% higher mechanical properties than E-glass sample, and 50% lower as compared with carbon sample, whereas the weight of basalt sample was 34% higher than that of carbon sample, and 5% lower than weight of E-glass sample.
Testing results are given in the table below.
